Australian Passport Fees Confirmed for January 2026

Update (January 2026): The Australian Government has now published the official passport application fees, which took effect on 1 January 2026.

The cost of obtaining and renewing an Australian passport, which currently holds the distinction as one of the world’s most expensive travel documents, has increased again from 1 January 2026.

These fees are adjusted annually in line with movements in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

What This Means for You

  • A 10-year adult passport now costs $422 — up from $412 in 2025.
  • Child and senior passports (5-year validity) are both $213.
  • Urgent processing services and overseas surcharges mean the total cost of getting a passport lodged overseas can be significantly higher.

While the annual CPI adjustment is modest, the cumulative cost of a passport remains one of the highest globally — a point that continues to draw public attention.

Still the Most Expensive Worldwide

Australia has long maintained one of the most expensive passport fees internationally — particularly for the standard 10-year adult passport. While figures change year to year, the latest data confirms Australia’s position near the top when compared to other advanced economies.

Planning Tips

  • If your passport is expiring soon, renew early
  • Factor in additional services like priority processing or overseas surcharges if you’re applying from outside Australia.
  • The passport is typically applied for after citizenship is granted, so those planning their pathway to Australian citizenship should include this cost in their budgeting.
